Jennifer Garcia

Anthropology, Minor: Spanish

Nominated by Mary Sue Savage

Jennifer Garcia has played an active role in CHECK IT for the last three years. She first got involved with CHECK IT as a volunteer in Fall 2017, became an intern in Spring 2018 and then a CHECK IT peer educator in Fall 2018. She currently serves as CHECK IT’s graphic design coordinator. Jennifer serves as our main CHECK IT intern mentor. She developed the graphics for our Love KNOWS boundaries campaign which educates the campus community about healthy relationships, dating violence, and ways to support survivors of dating violence. In addition, she is currently developing graphics and outreach materials for our new campaign called listen, believe, support. She works closely with our interns and new staff members to provide extra support, training, and guidance. Under her leadership, our student staff have learned to make buttons, posters, stickers and other outreach materials. Through her mentorship, she has shown incredible patience and thoughtfulness. She is a very compassionate and supportive leader, making her CHECK IT’s go-to person for providing support to other staff members.

Jennifer served as a facilitator for the Acts to End Sexualized Violence 2 unit course during the class action project, where she led class trainings in intersectionality, calling in, survivor support, and bystander intervention. She goes above and beyond to be there for other staff members and actively contributes to creating a strong team dynamic. Jennifer’s passion, positive energy, strong work ethic, and dedication to CHECK IT and social change in general have made her not only an inspiration to the team but also an invaluable asset. Jennifer has also been involved in providing support to our Students for Violence Prevention First Year Learning Community. This learning community is aimed at creating a more consent-centered culture and providing students with tools in bystander intervention, survivor support, healthy relationships, and consent. It is one of the first violence prevention themed learning communities in the country. While Jennifer’s graphic design work is impressive, her energy and positive personality really stand out. She is the one in the office who makes everyone laugh and brightens people’s days. She’s there for volunteers, staff members, and the general campus community.
