Rangeland Resource Science

India has made a difference on the Cal Poly Humboldt Campus with the ongoing student support she has provided to other students in a variety of contexts during the entire time she has been working towards her Bachelor’s Degree. Currently, India is working as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for students taking Botany 105. India’s role as a Supplemental Instruction(SI) Leader requires her to be responsible for leading two Credit/No Credit university classes a week that students enroll in, and she independently creates active-learning lesson plans for these sessions. Her Botany classes review the most difficult concepts covered in lecture in a manner that included small group work and study skill development. India also facilitates activities that help students get to know each other so they feel comfortable explaining concepts to each other, so they easily work together within and outside of the classroom. In addition to being an SI Leader, India has expanded her reach towards students by joining the Writing Studio team as a Writing Consultant. In this role, India brings her expertise as a science major to support the communication skills of her fellow students. Here she works one on one with other students helping them approach, understand and talk through their ideas for their writing assignments. During India's first year on campus, she worked as a RAMP mentor too. Being employed on campus in these three different areas shows the depth of the knowledge India has learned about the campus community, its resources, how to be successful as a student and has shown that her heart is in helping other students be successful in school. Samar: India has been the S.I. leader for my Bot 105 General Botany Course for the past three semesters. My students love attending her S.I. sessions and have expressed gratitude for the effectiveness and contributions to their success in General Botany. During the three semesters that I worked with India, she has demonstrated that she very knowledgeable in botany, very creative in her lesson planning, and truly cares about the success of her students. India is very dedicated to her position as a S.I. leader, she frequently attends my lectures and laboratories to better serve her students, as well as the summer session of BOT 105 to take pictures of live plant material to implement into her teaching tools the following semester. In addition to the exceptional PowerPoint presentations, posters, games, and activities that she has constructed for her students, she assembled a collection of resources for her students to utilize outside of her sessions to further assist them in my course. Her multiple positions held here at Cal Poly Humboldt have allowed to build a skillset of effective pedagogy, compassion for others, and allows her to create a safe learning environment.
