Dave Marshall

As the advisor of one of HSU’s newest clubs, David Marshall has been instrumental in supporting PC Gaming members in not only becoming one of the most active and popular clubs on campus, but also in assisting the club in attaining some lofty goals. Through his efforts and direction, there is now a permanently installed flight simulator in the HSU Library. This $10K simulator allows students and community members to learn about the parts of an airplane and actually how to fly a plane!

Dave took the “what if” of having a flight simulator on campus and then guided club members in tangible ways to make it happen. He coached students on how to make presentations to large groups to solicit donations; the importance of networking with campus partners to find a space for the equipment; and what resources were available with national organizations via grant writing.

His nominator wrote:
“When I first came to David with a small idea of wanting to start and lead the club, David took the opportunity to make it a positive, meaningful educational experience for HSU students, and advocated for the club to have a space to play in, used his expertise in technological services to brainstorm ways for us to game in a space without impacting academic activities, and engaged university leadership in support of the club’s programs. I have learned much from David about how to lead others and create a common goal for the club to work towards. I plan to graduate next fall and will use the skills David has taught me through his mentorship in my life after college.”

Recently, club members organized and hosted an invitational eSports gaming event for HSU students and community members. With Dave’s guidance and leadership, the event had more than 100 participants and was instrumental in recruiting many new members. David empowered club members to volunteer their time, meet with staff and administrators to create an event that easily shifted online during this time of stress, and even provided cutbacks that saved the club and school money on the event while maintaining the same prestigious levels of engagement.
