Breannah Rueda

Political Science, with Communication Minor

Nominated by Nicki Viso and Casey Park

Bree has been involved in student governance since she arrived at HSU as a transfer student in January of 2019. Bree threw herself into campus life to find a place where she could help make a difference for the personal, professional, and academic lives of students. She joined 3 committees with the Associated Students (A.S. Public Relations, A.S. Lobby Corps and the University Senate), joined her Residence Hall Association area council (Cypress), and she ran in the General Elections to eventually be elected the 2019-2020 A.S. Student Affairs Vice President. Additionally, Bree is serving on the Residence Hall Association executive board in the role of National Communications Coordinator (NCC). She represents the residence halls at HSU to the larger pacific region (Pacific Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls - PACURH), bringing resident concerns and solutions beyond the campus level to a multi-state, international level.

There's a concept about amplifying marginalized voices: you don't need to be their voice, you just need to pass the mic. That perfectly encapsulates the way Bree works and lives. She is always checking in with those most affected on an issue; she doesn't just consult with those constituents, but brings them into the meeting or conversation personally, empowering those and others to stand alongside her and voice their concerns and solutions. In addition to her work in A.S. and RHA, Bree is the Public Relations Coordinator for Formerly Incarcerated Students Club. FISC's mission is to be a living supportive entity for formerly incarcerated students to help navigate and provide resources. It is also for those who have been affected by friends or family who have been incarcerated and anyone who wants to make changes in the criminal justice system and reverse the schools to prison pipeline.

Bree has been one of the biggest recruiters for students to apply for campus, Senate and A.S. Committees. Her own committee has not had standing membership in the last few years, but she has successfully recruited a full Student Affairs Advisory Committee, which is talking about student employee rights, beautifying campus with student murals, and more. Bree has been instrumental in bringing AS and RHA together in intentional ways that further support student advocacy and getting student voices heard. It takes someone with a lot of dedication, communication skills, and passion to bring these two organizations together in this fashion.
